Sponsored by The Coleman Company, the 2014 Special Report on Paddlesports
uses the latest participation data collected annually by The Outdoor Foundation to present detailed information on participation in kayaking, canoeing, rafting and stand up paddling by gender, age, ethnicity, income, education and geographic region - critical information needed by businesses, communities and non-profits working to connect Americans with the outdoors.
A record number of Americans enjoyed paddlesports in 2013. Whether kayaking in the surf, rafting through river rapids, canoeing down a stream or stand up paddling along a placid lake, 20.8 million people - 7.2 percent of the U.S. population - enjoyed paddlesports in 2013. On average, each paddler took almost seven trips a year, contributing to 201 million annual paddling outings.
While paddling participation has increased since 2010, the sport has a significant outreach opportunity with minority groups. Minorities are underrepresented in each of the four paddling categories.
